FARMWAY 1: Part 2 These neighbours are kaypohs, yes, but they are also some of the warmest people around. They like to poke their noses at others' businesses, but they'll be the first to reach out when you shout, "HELP!" I enjoy living in this old neighbourhood in Buangkok South Farmway 1. Ours were the only 5 stout blocks of flats from a long time ago, when Ponggol was only known for its seafood. Most of our neighbours were neighbours in the old pig farms in Ponggol, and they would often recount stories of 'last time, in the old kampong, this person's father and that person's uncle...' And they call each other by names like 'Kopi' (this person used to own a coffeeshop), 'Taxi' (this person drove a taxi), 'Ang Mo Di' (this one, I'm not too sure, maybe he used to work for an ang mo?). My mum's called 'Ah Qin yia mug' (meaning Ah Qin's mother in teochew. My sis' name is Liqin, btw.) I'm sure all these uncles and aunties have real, sometimes even nice names, which you seldom get to know. I can go on and on about how I love this kampong and its people. Mmm... you don't get such treasures anymore. All the talks about remaking Singapore! If only we can bring back the good ol' warmth of people... Sigh!
